That's great news!!! And hopefully they'll improve on the formulation or create new versions. I enjoyed 4711 ICE more than the original. They also came up with a new 4711 ICE which is a blue juice and smelled like it orange peel..didn't like that one though.

Thanks for the information, Grant. This is the best possible solution, I would say. Mäurer & Wirtz are still a family outfit, I believe, and a German company. This is also a sign that they are not shaky themselves, as I had feared at some point. I wish they would do away with those ridiculous monk tales and concentrate on the quality of 4711 instead. They may not need the production site. But to maintain the old address would be important.

Yesterday Symrise went public, and their shares could be placed with a considerable gain.

Well, at least its where it belongs, in the company of (literally) Betty Barclay, Priscilla Presley and Nonchalance. Now lets talk about serious Eau de Cologne...

I seriously think they should come up with a new version of the scent. It has lots of potential IMO... They should make it more minty like pasha and add in more notes to make it more complex. It would be great if they made it even fresher. They seriously have to improve on its longevity too.

But if all these meant adding loads of synthetics, I'd rather have the original which contains(at least they claim to be) only natural ingredients.

I'm a little ashamed to admit that I panicked and bought an ultra-extra-grande-size bottle of it when I heard it was to be retired.

While I'm glad to have more of this fleeting beauty, I should have had more faith. Any brand this old can't die, at least not so unceremoniously.

Modern corporate culture (or more appropriately the lack thereof) being what it is I assumed the worst, all while hoping for the best.

But 4711 and Tabac together under one roof? It's almost too good to be true. Much thanks for doing us the solid Maurer & Wirtz:-D

There is one thing I really don't understand about this scent. As it is so loved and admired by so many, why don't they make a decent EDT or EDP version that lasts as long as similar type scents e.g Eau de Rochas, Eau de Hadrian?

Surely there has to be more money in making smaller bottles of stronger stuff and selling it at a higher price, than doing what they're doing now - selling big and gigantic bottles at very low prices.

the thing about eau de cologne is that it is not expensive so you can use it freely without worry....spray it on your bedsheets, in the bath and apply it heavilly to your person. Its fun sloshing it about everywhere

as far as Napoleon, I have no historical footnotes to quote. Were J.M. Farina and Muhlens prevalent historically at that time.

I used the info from here:
http://www.freewebs.com/celebrityfragrances

to bump 4711 up

The decent Version is the Original Farina Cologne R & G make: Jean Marie Farina, Eau de Cologne extra Vielle, 1806.

It has to also be understood that the original Colognes were and are not meant to give much scent. The Germans still don't buy Farina, 4711 and the many nameless successors for the purpose of scenting. It is still just a luxury face and body freshener. Historically it is the first 'water' used on the body of Europeans first and second class persons(!) after centuries of powdery stuff (reason: water was suspected to bring diseases like small pox, tuberculosis, and pestilence)!

In French the same group is called Hespéridés, and they were classified as (non smelly) masculines. They were also used as medicine, and standard equipment for Napoléons officers. So, forget your fears, Renato . If you do not believe me, perhaps some write up sanctioned by the British Society of Perfumers will:

>>The Citrus Group - The Splash Colognes: This is a very important group in Europe where some colognes are sold in quart sizes and are used by the whole family as a basic fragrance. Technically speaking, and until recently, they have not brought any revolution to the industry. Some of them are very old and still very successful. They are well-made with a large percentage of citrus. We had to wait until the latest generation to see real sophistication, such as in Eau Sauvage, where maybe for the first time Hedione was used, bringing to the public a very natural note of jasmin that was immediately loved. Created for men, it was also used by women because, in my opinion, of this very natural jasmin note. The influence of Eau Sauvage was felt in the new generation of Eaux like Eau de Rochas, 'O' de Lancome and others<<. source : copyright British Society of Perfumers 1983, found here: http://www.bsp.org.uk/newsarc/creat.html

There is another Farina in Cologne/Germany now, called Farina am Dom, who make an 'Eau de Cologne double'. It is also short lived. But why blame the historical colognes (including the French versions, like Eau Imperial etc.) who do not want to be a perfume, and are appreciated by millions of people for that, to simply be what they are? I do not have the impression we are short of real stinkers, or short of in-betweens. The house of 4711 has produced all kinds of other colognes and perfumes in the last 50plus years. Except for Tosca, none have survived. And you wouldn't like Tosca!
