Re: Balmain recommendations

To my nose Monsieur Balmain is both bolder and woodier than Eau du Sud, and does not share the Goutal's prominent basil note. I also find the Balmain less tart overall.

Of the other Balmain...

Re: Ylang Ylang Suggestions?

Manoumalia has an enormous ylang-ylang note at its heart.

Re: Heeley's Cuir Pleine Fleur

I like Cuir Pleine Fleur quite a lot, and reviewed it for the Directory some time back. To me it seems one of the more unusual and distinctive treatments of leather (licorice/vetiver/iris + leather)....

Re: Damn you Onda!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know about Djedi, but I wear Onda and have a hard time imagining its smoky, earthy leather smelling attractive on many women. But that's just me.

Dia for Men, Dzongkha, L'Homme Sage, L'Air du Desert Marocain, Epic Man, Wazamba, Filles en Aiguilles, and Jubilation XXV, for starters.

Re: Other Myrrh / Opoponax Recommendations?

Eau Lente for opoponax, bar none. My favorite myrrh based scent is still Lutens's La Myrrhe.

Re: Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier

Eau des Îles for smoke, Parfum d'Habit and Route du Vétiver for earthy, and Santal Noble and Iris Bleu Gris, just because they're so good. ;)

Re: I want Shalimar with some serious leather

Maybe Cuir Mauresque for an oriental/leather structure?

Re: If I like to wear Hermes Rocabar, what else will I like to wear?

Derby is still in production, but it is a limited distribution item with a very high retail price. ;-(

I don't see (or should I say, smell,) the resemblance.

Re: Fuel for life

Open to pages 110-111 of Michael Edwards's Fragrances of the World (2008), close your eyes, and point randomly.

Re: expensive colognes that smell cheap and vice versa

...certainly not what you think. :p

Probably Maître Parfumeur et Gantier (at least while they were still afloat,) and then perhaps Amouage. I'd probably give you different answers tomorrow, but...

Re: Fuel for life

I can't work up any enthusiasm over Fuel for Life. I consider it a serviceable but undistinguished offering in the overcrowded fruity fougère field. It's OK, it's inoffensive, but it's also...

Re: Spicy!

Noire Epices perhaps? Also Villoresi's Spezie, L'Air du Desert Marocain, Scarlett, Azzaro pour Homme, L'Autre or, lord help anyone within smelling range of you, Cacharel pour Homme.

Re: Scents that smell like 1) Plywood / lumber at Home Depot, 2) Pine Christmas tree

Tam Dao for lumber. Hinoki has that vibe too, but it costs twice as much and does not smell twice as good. Meanwhile, here's a real pine vibe in both Zagorsk and the new Parfum d'Empire Wazamba.

Re: Encre Noir or Vetiver?

Encre Noire by a mile. I've never been able to get excited about the Guerlain. For the kind of refined, civilized vetiver the Guerlain represents, I'd sooner turn to Sycomore, Givenchy Vetyver or...

Re: Poll: Which Oriental for Winter?

Patou pour Homme and Jaïpur Homme (EdT) get my votes. I have not tried the Dupont, the Anucci, or Roma Uomo, and I wouldn't consider Geir an oriental by any stretch of the imagination.

Re: Suggest me some good LIGHT Orientals

:o

Nice, but not particularly "oriental" in character. It's more of a green woody fragrance - almost a kind of slenderized, modernized interpretation of the Grey Flannel style.

Re: Rochas relaunches website

Great news Grant!

Rochas has discontinued so many of its best scents that I've worried about its survival. The house has miserably inadequate marketiung and distribution in the US - criminal for...

Re: Parfum d'Empire Wazamba

The plot thickens. I smell a lot of sweet fruit alongside the fir resin and incense in Wazamba.
