Basenotes Community Code of Conduct for Members
Thank you for taking part in the Basenotes Community. These guidelines are here to make this site a pleasant place to participate in and are in addition to the
terms of use
which all members agree to when registering for these forums.
If you feel a member has breached these guidelines in a post, please use the report post function (which looks like this
) to alert the moderation team.
Code of Conduct
1. Your Account
1.1 You are responsible for your own account
Please ensure that you keep your log-in details private. You are fully responsible for all activities that occur under your password or account and are not permitted to allow another individual access to your account whether intentional or otherwise.
1.2 You may only have one active account.
Members are permitted to have more than one Basenotes account, provided that the older accounts are no longer in use. Individual members with more than one active account may have both accounts deleted without warning. If you feel you have a valid reason for two accounts please contact us. If you have forgotten your password you can request a new one by clicking this link here [Add link to password generator]
1.3 You may not use your account to impersonate another individual or company
Do not use your account to impersonate someone you are not, even in jest. This includes signing your post with another individual's name.
2. Your Conduct
In your use of the Basenotes Community
you are expected to remain respectful and civil at all times
. Please be aware of the following.
2.1 Flaming and personal attacks are not tolerated.
We realise that situations can sometimes get heated. Remember that while it is perfectly acceptable to criticise the content of a post - criticising the poster is not.
2.2 The Basenotes Community is not a venue for personal or private vendettas.
Keep your personal business as just that – personal. This forum is not a venue for the resolution of personal disputes with members or companies.
2.3 Airing of moderating grievances
If you feel you or someone else has been moderated unfairly do not air your grievances on the board. Instead take it up with the moderator involved, or if this does not provide a satisfactory outcome, contact the
website administrator
with full details.
2.4 Private Disputes with other members
Basenotes and its moderators will not get involved in disputes between members that take place via email or Private Message. All members have the ability to make their email address private (recommended) and the
ability to ignore Posts and Private Messages from certain members and it is their responsibility to do so.
2.5 Do not attempt to bypass a moderating decision
If you are advised to stop a discussion by an administrator or moderator then do so. Threads will be locked should discussion continue after you have been advise. If you wish to carry on your debate with another member after you have been advised to drop it, please use private email or the forum's personal message feature. Do not attempt to restart a locked thread.
2.6 You may not publish personal information of others.
You are not permitted to post on this site excerpts from email or any other private correspondence. The posting of personal information about other members is not permitted (ie real name, telephone number).
2.7 You must be responsible if you publish objectionable content.
While we do not encourage the use of gratuitous nudity in posts, we are aware of the perfume industry's obsession with sex and nudity and have no objection to the display of perfume advertising which may contain nudity (ie M7, Opium) provided that it is relevant to your post. Be aware that some users may be accessing the site from a public computer or work and we would ask you to provide a warning in your thread title or next to any external links if a thread contains possibly unsuitable content. (If it helps NSFW = Not Suitable For Work)
2.8 You are requested to avoid 'hot topics'
The Basenotes Community is not a suitable platform for the discussion of politics, religion and other hot topics. Posts, signatures and any other material you make public to the site containing these or any other hot topics may be locked, edited or removed.
2.9 No Spamming
Your post should contain information that is useful to our visitors. Posts that are deemed spam will be deleted. Information about where to buy cellphones or get pornography are not deemed useful.
2.10 No soliciting or advertising
Posts or Private Messages which are designed purely to solicit or promote a business or website are not permitted without prior agreement. This includes the use of whisper campaigns. We realise that many members may have businesses which may be of interest to our visitors but please remember that people come here to discuss, not to be sold to in threads. If you have a product or service you wish to advertise contact us at news.desk@basenotes.net and we will consider mentioning it on the main website.
We do allow discrete links in signatures, and you may respond to a thread if your business provides a product or service that provides an answer to a members problem. Do not abuse this privilege - the majority of your posts should be about participating in the community in general.
The Community is not a place to solicit products or services from other members.
2.11 No vulgar, obscene or indecent language, information or images.
Try and use your common sense here. There's a difference between profanity and excessive profanity. See also the note on nudity in 2.7
2.12 Do not defame, abuse or threaten others.
As well as other Community Users, this includes businesses, traders, sellers and people outside of the Community.
2.13 Do not promote illegal activity or discuss illegal activities with the intent to commit them.
2.14 You may not post or publish anything is deemed to be bigoted, hateful or racially offensive.
This includes posts that are designed to promote such behaviour. See Trolling: 2.17
2.15 You may not post copyrighted material
Your posts and any other information you publish to the site may not contain unauthorized copyrighted material. The posting of copyrighted text is forbidden. If you wish to pass on some information from another source, either link to the source or paraphrase the text. Violations of copyright law on the community will now be deleted without warning. As a general rule - if you didn't write or create it, you can't post it.
2.16 No Hot-linking (Bandwidth Theft)
Only link to images on Basenotes.net, or sites you have permission to link from. Links to images on external sites without permission will be removed. (
This link explains why
, and here are some sites where you can upload images without bandwidth theft concerns: http://www.picomi.com http://www.imageshack.us)
2.17 No Trolling
Posts that are inflammatory and are posted just to make people annoyed are considered trolling and are not acceptable
3. Your posts
3.1 Your post must be in English.
We are an English language website, with a majority of English reading members. We are unable to moderate or, more importantly, enjoy posts which are in a language that we cannot understand. Members can of course use the personal message feature to help or discuss in other languages.
3.2 Please make sure your post is on topic.
If you are posting a new thread, please ensure that your thread is relevant to the forum you are posting in. Likewise, if you are replying to a thread - ask yourself is your reply relevant to the original post? If not consider starting a new thread. We may delete or move threads or posts that are off topic.
3.3 Do not post the same thread in more than one forum (cross-posting).
Please ensure that you post your thread once in the most relevant forum. Most members browse through all the forums, and do not wish to see the same threads in each one. It is more useful when all the replies to the thread topic to be in one place. That way it is easier for searchers to find all the replies and thus all the information, rather than hunting for it and replying to it in multiple and scattered places.
Any duplicate threads may be deleted or merged.
3.4 Think carefully before you post a message
Posts made on the Basenotes Community become public in that anyone is able to see them. Your posts are permanent and are likely to be found on search engines like Google and Yahoo.
You are responsible for your post's contents to be within the Basenotes rules. Moderators are not responsible for adapting it or making it conform to the guidelines
You are able to edit your message for typos for one hour after it has posted. After this time you will need to contact a moderator to edit your post, which they will do at their discretion.
3.5 For Sale / Swap posts are not permitted in the Discussion boards
Posts of this type may only be placed in the Basenotes Marketplace. There are certain restricitions as to who can post on these boards
which can be read here.
4. Your Avatar and signature
Signatures may contain images, links, and texts.
Avatars and Signature's may be used to
discretely
promote your own concern (a blog, business or website for example).
Avatars and Signature's may not contain the following:
4.1
Images used in signatures should be no taller than 75 pixels and no wider than 500 pixels.
4.2
Political references
4.3

5. The Basenotes Marketplace
By using the Basenotes Marketplace, You agree to these guidelines and you understand that you are using this system at your own risk.
Basenotes members taking part in the Basenotes Market Place to swap, sell or buy products do so entirely at their own risk. The Basenotes Market Place is for private sale only. Basenotes does not monitor the Market Place for accuracy, quality or reliability and Basenotes cannot guarantee whether items purchased via the Market Place are safe, as described or of a certain quality. Basenotes is not responsible for the outcome of any transaction and as such offer no compensation for a bad transaction.
Note that these guidelines should be read in conjunction with the
Marketplace Guidelines that can be found here
5.1 Do not use the discussion forums as a board for outing bad swappers.
The only permitted outlet for leaving feedback is on a member's feedback page.
5.2 You are permitted one post at a time in each Marketplace forum
You have the ability to delete your post once it has served its purpose. If you have more than one post - the most recent post will be deleted.
5.4 Abuse of ability to edit and delete your posts.
You are able to edit your posts in the Marketplace for an unlimited amount of time. You are also able to delete your post once your post has served its purpose. Members deleting and re-posting threads purely to rise to the top of the forum will have their ability to use the Marketplace restricted.
5.5 Threads with no activity after three months will at our discretion be deleted.
5.6 Basenotes and its moderators will not mediate disputes arising from the Marketplace.
Please do not put us in the position of doing so.
5.7 No excessive Bumping
Bumping is the practice of replying to your own post, with no additional information purely to move it to the top of the pile.
Each time you bump your own thread, another thread moves down a place. Please restrict replying to your own thread only in the following circumstances
:
When you are responding to another member's post or question.
If you have made substantial changes to your listing - maybe you have lowered the prices, or added a number of new items.
Please do not bump your thread if an item is no longer available (IE, it has been sold or swapped away). We have limitations in place to prevent self-promotional bumping. Members attempting to circumvent these may have their Marketplace privileges taken away or restricted. You are able to edit your thread's original post to fix availability information without bumping the thread.
5.8 The Marketplace is for the sale/trade of fragrances and related body products
It is not the place for selling clothes, cosmetics, toothpaste, cd's, dvd's etc.
5.8 The sale or trade of 'home-made' fragrance decants in the Marketplace is not permitted
Standard manufacturer's bottle only
Important Notes and Etiquette Guidelines
Etiquette Guidelines
These are suggestions to help make every one's experience more enjoyable. These are not rules
per se
but suggestions. However, consistently displaying bad etiquette may be considered a breach of the spirit of the rules.
If you are new to fragrances, you are recommended to post in the Just Starting Out forum. This forum is designed to help people who are new to fragrances. You shouldn't be afraid to ask a question there, no matter how silly it seems. We aim to provide a friendly area where people can come and learn.
Welcome newcomers - if you are an 'old-timer', try to think back to when you first joined and how daunting it may have been. A new member shouldn't be made to feel stupid for asking what you may see as a stupid question
Before you post, make sure that you do a quick search to make sure that your question or subject has not been recently covered. It can be frustrating to see the same question posted each week.
Try to avoid replying to threads that are over six months old. Information may be outdated, so it is best to start a new thread in these cases.
Members should avoid the posting in all CAPS LOCK, using 'leet' speak or using 'u' for you etc as this can make posts difficult to read. It is worth remembering that English may not be the first language of other members.
If you have nothing of use to add to a thread, then there is no need to post to it.
Refrain from making negative comments about a another member's thread - you are more than welcome to start a new thread on something you find more interesting!
If your thread is not answered, avoid getting angry or constantly bumping it. Members will answer questions if they are able to and if they want to.
Important Notes
As per our
terms of use
we reserve the right to edit, delete or lock any thread we see fit. However, we are under no obligation to delete, edit or remove posts whether individually or en mass. Basenotes has no obligation to delete content that you find personally objectionable or offensive.
Remember that anything posted to the Basenotes Community becomes public and maybe found via search engines.
Basenotes has the right to delete any post and ban any user, with or without notice, at any time and for any reason, including, without limitation, our judgment that the user has violated these community guidelines.
What may get you banned.
These are guidelines and do not necessarily mean that a member will be banned in these circumstances. This is by no means an exhaustive list.
If you cause disruption or harm to your fellow members' experience or enjoyment of the Basenotes Community.
Repeated rule violations and hostility.
Disregarding warnings.
Frequent complaints from other members.
Any action which could cause harm to the site, its members or others.
Remember "treat others as you would like to be treated." and have fun.
I have read, and agree to abide by the Basenotes rules.
